Open EPS, PS and PRN Files Without a PostScript Viewer

EPS is what Illustrator, InDesign and CorelDRAW export when a print shop asks for a logo, and what LaTeX has used for figures for decades. PS and PRN files are print output, from dvips or from a Windows printer driver set to print to file. A PRN converts if that driver spoke PostScript, or if the file is really a TIFF, BMP or PNG image. PCL jobs do not, and the FAQ below shows how to tell them apart. Few desktop programs open any of these today. As a PDF the same file opens in any browser or reader, and you can send it on without asking what software the other person has.

Vector Artwork Stays Vector

PostScript describes shapes as paths and text as glyphs, and the converter leaves them that way: in our tests a vector logo and a three-page print job came out with no raster images at all. A logo that went in as curves comes out as curves. It scales to a poster or a business card without going soft. Fonts are embedded and subsetted too, which is what keeps the type intact on a machine that has never had them installed.

Encrypted Upload and Download

Files move between your browser and our servers over a 256-bit SSL encrypted connection. Nobody on the network in between can read the artwork or the print job. We do not sell or pass on anything you upload.

Deleted After Three Hours

Unreleased logos and client proofs should not linger on someone else's server. The PDF stays available for three hours. When that window closes, the original EPS, PS or PRN file and the PDF are both wiped from our servers automatically. Lose the download and you will have to run the file through once more.

How do I convert EPS to PDF for free?

Upload the EPS file with the selector above and download the PDF when it is ready. There is nothing to install and you don't need an account. The same page handles PS and PRN files.

What is a PRN file and how do I convert PRN to PDF?

A PRN file is the raw data a printer driver would have sent to the printer, saved to disk because 'Print to file' was ticked in the print dialog. PostScript drivers write PostScript, often wrapped in a PJL header, and that kind converts here. PCL and PCL XL drivers write a printer language this converter does not understand, so those files fail. If the .prn is really a TIFF, BMP or PNG image, it converts as well. The extension doesn't tell you which kind you have, so open the file in Notepad or TextEdit: PostScript starts with %!PS or with a @PJL header whose ENTER LANGUAGE line says POSTSCRIPT. If that line says PCL or PCLXL, or the file starts with an escape character and then binary rather than a readable header, it is a PCL job and will not convert.

What is the difference between EPS and PS files?

Both are PostScript. An EPS holds one piece of artwork with a bounding box, so a layout program can drop it onto a page. A PS file describes complete pages, the way a printer would receive them.

Does converting EPS to PDF lose quality?

No. The shapes and text stay vectors in the PDF and print as sharply as the original at any size. One thing to know: the artwork is placed on a standard page rather than cropped to its bounding box, so a small logo will sit on a full-size page.

Can I convert a multi-page PS file to PDF?

Yes. Every page in the PS file becomes a page in the PDF, in the same order. A three-page print job gives a three-page PDF.

Is it safe to convert EPS, PS and PRN files online?

Yes. The file travels over a 256-bit SSL encrypted connection, and three hours after the conversion both the upload and the PDF are gone from our servers. We do not share your files with anyone.
